Singapura

The breed was developed from a small nucleus of cats brought to the USA from Singapore by Hal and Tommy Meadow in the mid 1970s. They are compact cats with an athletic and muscular build. Their unique coat results from the combination of a colour restriction gene (the same as the one found in the Burmese breed) and the ticked tabby gene (which is found in breeds such as the Abyssinian). This causes individual hairs in the coat to be ticked with bands of colour. The colour is always sepia brown on ivory. The Burmese colour restriction causes the coat to be a lighter, more delicate colour than a normal brown ticked tabby. The Singapura only comes in one colour/pattern so all the cats look similar. The breed is best known in the USA where it was developed and where it has gained full championship status. Singapuras have been slowly spreading around the world and are gaining in popularity in many countries. In the UK the breed is still rare but you can often see a few cats at shows and there is a dedicated group of breeders who have worked hard to promote the breed to championship status.
